Princess Diana was reportedly tricked into believing false scenarios when she sat down and did her infamous Panorama interview with Martin Bashir for BBC. Earl Charles Spencer detailed how the former BBC presenter reportedly deceived them, so that he could interview the Princess of Wales.

Princess Diana Was Reportedly Subjected To Multiple Lies Before Panorama Interview

The late Princess of Wales raised several eyebrows with her infamous Panorama interview with Martin Bashir in 1995. During the chat, Princess Diana said that her relationship with Prince Charles didn't work because "there were three of us in this marriage," implying Prince Charles' affair with Duchess Camilla.

The Queen was not happy with the interview because royals do not air their dirty laundry in public. In an op-ed for Daily Mail, Princess Diana's brother detailed how Bashir allegedly manipulated them to secure the interview with Princess Diana and why his sister reacted that way.

"She may well have chosen to grant the media an interview anyway – and if she had, I'd have fully supported her – but the agonising lies that she was told by the BBC before their cameras finally rolled ensured that she came into that Panorama interview with a very skewed and false view of the situation she was in, having been lied to repeatedly," Charles wrote.

"This led to her speaking in a way that set her on a course where she was without due protection when she needed it most. All those responsible must be held to account."

He called out the police to continue the investigation and "get to the bottom of this terrible scandal" that led his sister to "feel even more exposed and alone, and deceived her into forgoing those who cared for her and would have protected her."

Charles Spencer Felt Groomed By Martin Bashir So He Would Introduce Him To Princess Diana

Charles Spencer recalled meeting Martin Bashir for the first time on Aug. 31, 1995. According to him, the journalist shared "a series of tales so extraordinary," which prompted him to call the Panorama executive producer, who confirmed that what he learned was all true and that he could trust Bashir.

"Over the following three weeks I feel that I was groomed: I was shown forged bank statements; I was told of underhand payments, of spying, and of appalling deception. But, all along I was the one being deceived in order for Mr Bashir to get to my late sister, through me," he continued.

Charles introduced Bashir to Princess Diana on Sept. 19, 1995. During their meeting, Charles admitted that he was "struck by a number of discrepancies between what he told my late sister and what he had told me previously."

When Bashir left, Charles approached his sister and apologized.

"I said, 'I'm sorry, Duch – I've wasted your time. What that man has just said doesn't add up', and highlighted some of the discrepancies with what he'd told me before. She said, 'Don't worry, Carlos [her name for me], it doesn't matter – it was lovely to see you anyway,'" Charles added.

BBC already issued a formal apology to Prince Charles, Prince William and Prince Harry over Princess Diana's controversial interview. In a statement released by BBC director general Tim Davie Thursday, the network regretted the way the interview was obtained and promised to never air it again.
