Princess Diana and Prince Charles had a fairytale wedding that a lot of people envied back in the day. The couple – who eventually became exes – also looked smitten with each other when they tied the knot at St. Paul’s Cathedral. And they also shared a very public kiss after royal fans urged them to lock licks after their wedding ceremony.

But what thousands of people didn’t know back then was that Prince Charles wasn’t reportedly in love with Princess Diana. Rather, he was still caught up with another woman: Camilla Parker-Bowles. But at the time of the Prince and Princess of Wales’s wedding, Camilla was already married to Andrew Parker-Bowles, so Prince Charles could no longer be with her.

Prince Charles Confessed To Princess Diana That He Didn’t Really Love Her

In the documentary, The Diana Interview: Revenge of a Princess, Princess Diana’s astrologer and friend, Penny Thornton, detailed a conversation that she had with the late royal.

“One of the most shocking things that Diana told me was that the night before the wedding, Charles told her that he didn’t love her. I think Charles didn’t want to go into the wedding on a false premise. He wanted to square it with her, and it was devastating for Diana,” she said (via Marie Claire).

Prior to their wedding, Prince Charles had already dropped a major clue that he wasn’t really in love with the woman he was about to marry. During the couple’s engagement interview, Prince Charles gave a cryptic response after the interviewer asked him if he was in love with Princess Diana. Instead of saying yes, he said, “whatever love means.”

And in Penny Junor’s book The Duchess: The Untold Story, the author revealed that Prince Charles also wanted to back out from his royal wedding. However, he realized that it was too late for him to do so.

“Charles was not convinced he was doing the right thing in marrying Diana, but there was no way out and, bolstered by the hope that things would be different once they were married, he put a brave face on it,” Junor said.
