Prince Charles is the future king of England. As Queen Elizabeth’s successor, he will head the monarchy following the monarch’s passing. But according to one royal expert, the Order of Succession almost changed in the 90s after Prince Charles allegedly expressed his desire to quit his royal role and just work as a part-time royal in Italy.
Prince Charles Allegedly Wanted To Quit His Royal Duties Because The Media Intruded With His Personal Life
During a recent discussion, royal expert Russell Myers claimed to have heard the information about Prince Charles wanting to quit his royal duties from three unnamed individuals.
“That was one of the things I heard from three different people. This was really in the 1990s, at the height or depth of tabloid intrusion into his life, and Diana's. I think he was, you know, he felt very, he was very angry and it was getting to the stage where it had really affected his life, his estranged wife's life, and their children's lives. People forget how remorseless media intrusion to them was in the 1900s. He had come up with this idea, allegedly, that he would spend six months of the year living in Tuscany in Northern Italy,” Myers said (via Express).
Prince Charles’ Alleged Plans Would’ve Changed The Order Of Succession
If Prince Charles’ alleged plans pushed through, this means that he would no longer be entitled to his role as the future king. His decision would’ve also changed the Order of Succession and would’ve meant that Prince William wouldn’t also become second in line to the throne.
Since Prince Charles’ desire to leave his royal duties happened in the 90s, the rules with regard to the Order of Succession were also a bit different. Even though Princess Anne was born after Prince Charles, she wouldn’t have also been allowed to succeed Queen Elizabeth. Instead, the role as successor would’ve been passed on to Prince Andrew.
A similar incident happened decades ago when King Edward VIII abdicated from the throne so that he could be with the woman that he loved. His decision meant that his younger brother, George VI, was crowned as king following his abdication.
And since King George VI’s eldest child was Queen Elizabeth, the latter because the next monarch.
Prince Charles’ Youngest Son Prince Harry, Daughter-In-Law Meghan Markle Quit Their Royal Duties
Several decades later, Prince Charles’ youngest son, Prince Harry, and his wife, Meghan Markle, announced their decision to quit The Firm. In his statement, the Duke of Sussex revealed that he and Markle wanted to work as part-time royals, but the queen did not approve of this setup.
As such, the Duke and Duchess of Sussex ended up quitting their royal duties for good. And they also relocated to the United States.
