Prince William allegedly wants to have his presence felt in the United States. A royal expert wonders if he is competing or just following his younger brother Prince Harry, who is currently living in California.
Is Prince William Competing With Prince Harry After Sussexes Allegedly Replaces Cambridges In The U.S.A?
According to royal executive editor and correspondent Omid Scobie, the Americans have been fascinated by British royalty. There has been a keen interest in them, and "that space was once occupied by the Cambridges," suggesting that another royal couple is dominating in America.
The Finding Freedom co-author claimed that the Americans' interest in the royals was renewed when Prince Harry married an American and brought Meghan Markle into the House of Windsor.
"The story of Meghan's journey as a royal (and all things related to it) still accounts for the majority of royal coverage in the US," Scobie wrote for Yahoo News UK.
On the other hand, Scobie said that the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge used to appear in America's TV specials and magazine covers, but "the excitement and curiosity for the pair waned."
Scobie added that the Cambridges became a tougher sell to the audiences. That was why there were no U.S. media outlets during their Caribbean tour. But they remain popular in the U.K., unlike the Sussexes.
"And it seems Kensington Palace is now hoping they can do the same in the US," Scobie added.
Prince William announced that he would be heading to Boston later this year for the Earthshot Prize. A source told the royal biographer earlier that Prince Harry's brother wants his presence to be felt in the United States.
"William is keen for his work to be seen and have impact outside of the UK and the royal bubble," a source said. "The charitable landscape in America is huge and he wants to have a presence."
Although the source did not mention any competition between the royal siblings, Scobie wondered if it was at play.
"I wondered if a little competitiveness with his brother might be in the mix, too. Harry's popularity in Britain may be suffering, but his rise in the US has seen the Archewell Foundation receive huge attention from an impressive list of donors, and his charitable efforts and campaigning has quickly seen him acknowledged by the likes of Forbes and TIME, who named him and Meghan two of the world's most influential people," he added.
Does Prince William Need A PR Boost?
Scobie also speculated that Prince William needed a PR boost. He mentioned the Cambridges hiring a new head of communications who has spent the past seven years climbing the ranks of the US mass media empire NBC Universal.
British PR chief Lee Thompson started working with Kensington Palace this month as VP of global communications and strategic partnerships for the conglomerate.

Scobie believed that the future king and queen may have realized that "a slice of American pie would be nice." He also added that the Cambridges might need to boost their PR worldwide.
"And with the monarchy's declining popularity across large parts of the Commonwealth, and the UK finding itself in an increasingly competitive and globalised world, now seems like the perfect time for a much-needed PR boost," he concluded.
