Prince William is more popular than his father, Prince Charles. There are discussions if it's possible to skip the Prince of Wales and make the Duke of Cambridge king after Queen Elizabeth. However, the heir apparent has a protector in the person of his second wife, Camilla Parker Bowles.

Prince William Warned To Never Overstep His Dad Prince Charles

According to royal biographer Robert Jobson, Duchess Camilla is "fiercely protective" of her husband. So, Prince William should be careful to never step out of line with her dad because the Duchess of Cornwall would surely put him in his place.

Camilla doesn't want anyone to abuse the Prince of Wales. She's even reportedly ready to take on Prince William and Prince Harry if she feels that they "abuse" their father's generosity.

"She’s also quite prepared to put William in his place when she feels he’s abusing his father’s generosity and kindness," Jobson said in his book William at 40: The Making of a Modern Monarch, per Geo News.

"The truth is the Duchess feels it is her duty to protect the Prince of Wales from himself sometimes. He is going to be King, and she doesn’t mind reminding others in the family of that now and again – and that includes his son and heir."

Prince William Will Never Be King Before His Father Prince Charles

Meanwhile, for those hoping to see Kate Middleton's husband take over the throne after Queen Elizabeth, that is impossible to happen. There is no way that Prince Charles will ever be skipped in the line of hierarchy.

"Most things about the monarchy require an Act of Parliament to change them," Professor Vernon Bogdanor of King's College London’s Centre for British Politics and Government told Express. "This is one of the problems with some rather foolish people I think who say you can skip a generation and go to Prince William."

He continued, "For a change of succession, you would need an Act of Parliament. Not just in Britain but in Australia, Canada, New Zealand, Jamaica, everywhere else and no one wants that."

Royal expert Richard Fitzwilliams shared the same opinion.

"We have a hereditary monarchy so the line of succession is fixed and does not skip a generation. It obviously is not influenced by opinion polls," he told Express.co.uk.

The Duke of Cambridge has no issue waiting for his turn.

"Although like his father, William will be destined to have a far shorter reign than his grandmother, he has said he has no desire to 'climb the ladder of kingship' before his time," said Gill Knappet, author of Charles, Prince of Wales.
