Prince William paid a sweet tribute to Queen Elizabeth II during the Caribbean tour. When the Duke of Cambridge delivered a speech in an evening reception on their last day in Belize, he quoted a remark from his grandmother almost 20 years ago.
Prince William Channels Queen Elizabeth II In His Speech In Belize
The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge had a great time in Belize and it was evident in the photos and videos they shared during their visit to the Caribbean country. They ended their royal tour there by attending a special evening reception hosted by Froya Tzalam, the Governor-General of the Caribbean nation.
Prince William delivered a speech at the gathering and he quoted a famous address made by Queen Elizabeth II in 1994 about freedom and democracy amid the Russian invasion of Ukraine.
"She [the Queen] said, 'I am proud to associate myself with your determination that social justice and personal freedom should flourish under the rule of law,'" Prince William was quoted by Express as saying.
"It is always dangerous, however, to be complacent and to assume that democratic values will look after themselves. Vigilance in protecting them is needed. Her Majesty went on to say that, 'Most of all, democracy is safe-guarded by teamwork – the individual wills of all citizens, each pulling together towards the same objective.'"
The future British King went on and address the crisis in Ukraine after quoting his grandmother's statement.
"Sadly, elsewhere in the world, that vigilance is being tested today in Ukraine," he continued. "Belize has joined many others in condemning the invasion and standing up for the principles of international law, peace and security. Today we think of those struggling in Ukraine and we stand with them in solidarity."
Prince William And Kate Middleton Support Ukraine
Prior to Prince William's statement about the conflict between Russia and Ukraine, the royal couple already voiced their support for the latter. The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge took to Twitter and recounted the time they met Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and his wife, Olena, almost two years ago.
"In October 2020, we had the privilege to meet President Zelenskyy and the First Lady to learn of their hope and optimism for Ukraine's future," the couple posted via their joint @KensingtonRoyal Twitter account. "Today we stand with the President and all of Ukraine's people as they bravely fight for that future."
The President of Ukraine acknowledged the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge's support and thanked the royal family.
"Olena and I are grateful to the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge @RoyalFamily that at this crucial time, when Ukraine is courageously opposing Russia's invasion, they stand by our country and support our brave citizens," Zelenskyy tweeted and concluded it with, "Good will triumph."
