In the end, Mirai Kakehashi does not become God.

Fans of Mirai can rest assured, though, that it’s not bad news for him. After the new god has been selected, the remaining god candidates that are alive return to normal lives, with the world’s memory of the contest removed.

Mirai and Saki, together for much of the show, end up getting married and opening a flower shop, fulfilling their wishes.

A happy ending! Well, almost…

It is not Mirai but another God candidate, Shuuji Nakaumi, that ends up being the one chosen to become God.

Shuuji is a quiet character who, initially, is against the idea of becoming God, similar to Mirai.
However, the story gets to a point where it is essentially a choice between Mirai and Shuuji.

In the end, Shuuji actually volunteers to take the position. While Mirai and Saki enjoy their life after the God candidacy on Earth, Shuuji watches from his new position above.

At the very end of the Platinum End Manga, the series delivers a dramatic turn that shocked many readers.

During the series, Shuuji makes clear his argument for suicide, seeing it as a legitimate option for humans. When he becomes God, he sees the world’s inequalities laid bare; some are happy while others take their lives.

Shuuji asks what he can do to help balance the world, but discovers that there is nothing that can be done as humanity is in control of itself. Concluding that there is, therefore, no need for a God, Shuuji commits suicide himself.

God’s death is followed by the disappearance of all life, starting with the angels and then all of humanity on Earth.

So, in the conclusion of Platinum End, everybody is dead, both human and angels.

It’s worth noting that many fans were disappointed with the manga’s conclusion, noting that it felt rushed and anticlimactic given all that had happened before. There’s every chance that the anime will decide to end differently, although nothing has been officially confirmed.

Shuuji’s suicidal conclusion happens in the very last chapter, and the series offers a slightly less dramatic (or less forced, depending on your opinion) ending just before. Other anime, including Death Note, have changed or removed the last few chapters to create a different ending for the anime, so there’s every chance this will happen for Platinum End.

No matter how you feel about the series’ ending, we can’t wait to see how this all plays out on screen!
