Platinum End Criticized After a Fan Commits Suicide From Watching the Anime Show

As reported by India.com, the local newspapers in Kolkata revealed that a 12-year-old boy took his life after watching the anime show Platinum End. The boy was said to jump off from the 11th floor of the apartment they were living in in the northern part of Kolkata. The investigation is still ongoing but the police spokesperson said that the boy might’ve taken his life with the thought that he would be saved like the character in Platinum End.

No foul play was shown in the case and an investigating officer revealed in a statement, " Though there is no physical evidence to his suicide but considering the circumstantial evidence we are apparently sure that the boy was so much addicted to this web-series that he though of jumping from the roof.”

Platinum End has some suicidal content from the start as it follows the story of Mirai Kakehashi who was an orphan living with abusive relatives following the death of his parents and sick of living his life, he tried to commit suicide by jumping off of a building but he was saved by an angel who revealed that Mirai was chosen to be one of the god candidates and he was given supernatural abilities.

From that point on, Mirai faced challenges dealing with other god candidates such as Metropoliman. One thing is common from all god candidates though, and it is dark, it is that at one point in time, they considered dying or taking their life as the solution to their problems as if it is the only way to escape.

Following the suicide of the 12-year-old child, Platinum End has been scrutinized for the dark theme of the show and whether there should be a trigger warning before every episode comes out. There is violence in the show as well so the creators might consider putting one before the show airs.

Platinum End releases new episodes on Crunchyroll and Funimation every Friday at 1:28 AM JST/ 9:28 AM PT/ 11:28 AM CT/ 12:28 PM EST/ 5:28 PM BST.
