Pinocchio Up Next for Disney Adaptations, Director Already in Talks

Disney is on a roll with its live-action adaptations. The next title queued in the lineup is none other than everyone's favorite puppet boy, Pinocchio.

Not only that, Deadline also revealed that a director is already in early talks to helm the live-action adaptation. Sam Mendes is reportedly in early discussions, though no commitments have been made to date.

However, this is only because Mendes's schedule is not allowing him to meet with Disney studio execs, thanks to his busy schedule with the production of The Ferryman, his West End play.

Mendes has been involved with recent projects before the news broke about his talks for Pinocchio. For starters, he was previously attached to another Disney film, James and the Giant Peach, though this has already fallen through. Outside Disney, Mendes was tagged to develop an adaptation of My Favorite Thing is Monsters for Sony Pictures.

The director has been known in recent years for his involvement in two James Bond films, Skyfall and Spectre, while his early pieces included American Beauty and Road to Perdition.

Pinocchio joins quite the extensive list of Disney live-action adaptations. Following the success of the likes of Maleficent, Beauty and the Beast, and Cinderella, it seems like the studio is creating its own Disneyverse. The Lion King, Dumbo, Aladdin, and Mulan already have directors. Other films that will have live-action counterparts include Cruella de Vil and The Little Mermaid.
