After the interview aired, several publications described it as a “bombshell interview” by Oprah Winfrey. However, the famed host recently told Gayle King that she did not set out to do this type of interview with Prince Harry and Meghan Markle.

During their conversation, Winfrey explained that she wanted to interview the couple to give them a platform to explain why they quit their royal duties. She also wanted the couple to give clarity to the stories written about them.

But during the course of their conversation, the Duke and Duchess of Sussex shared a number of statements that caught her off guard. And Winfrey thinks that these statements and revelations were the ones that led other publications to call their conversation a “bombshell interview.”

“I did not set out to do a bombshell interview. I set out to do an interview, have a conversation that would allow them to tell their story,” Winfrey said (via CBS Mornings).

“I do not get into people’s family matters… You know, everybody who has experienced some challenges within their families… with in-laws, with brothers, or sisters, knows how difficult some of those situations can be. And I’m sure that for the royal family it’s no different. And nobody consults me about their family business so I try to stay out of people’s family business,” Winfrey said.

“I think in all families - you know, my father passed recently, this summer - when all families come together for a common ceremony, the ritual of burying your dead, there’s an opportunity for peacemaking. And hopefully, there will be that,” Winfrey said (via 7news.com.au).

Gayle also asked Winfrey to comment on the queen’s death even though she initially thought that the host never had the opportunity to meet Her Majesty.

But Winfrey told King that she met the queen briefly at Prince Harry and Markle’s royal wedding. And they also had a brief exchange. However, the details of their conversation were not shared with the world.
