After being screened in Japanese cinemas for a month, One Piece Film: Red has now overtaken Jujutsu Kaisen 0 at the Japanese box office.
According to a report by Mantan Web, One Piece Red has earned over JPY 13.8 billion (USD 243 million) in its Japanese run so far, beating Jujutsu Kaisen 0’s lifetime domestic gross of JPY 13.75 billion (USD 96.67 million).
With this new box office record, One Piece Film: Red is now the eighth highest-earning anime film in Japan of all time. It is also officially the 14th highest-grossing film in the country’s history.
The official One Piece Twitter also shared that the film has now sold over 10 million tickets in Japan.
One Piece Red is the latest film in the franchise, and it was released in Japan on August 6. Ahead of this, the movie got an exclusive premiere on One Piece Day back in July. There, lucky fans were able to watch the film ahead of everyone else.
Following its general release, the film quickly became a massive hit. Not only did it earn over JPY 2.25 billion (USD 15.82 million) after its two-day opening weekend, but it also became the highest-grossing One Piece movie ever, beating Film: Z’s record after just 10 days.
The film’s success can be attributed to many reasons. Interest in anime movies may be much higher now thanks to big hits such as Demon Slayer: Mugen Train and Jujutsu Kaisen 0.
Though there’s also the fact that One Piece Film: Red is released as part of the franchise’s 25th anniversary.
It’s also significant for featuring Red Hair Shanks, one of the series’ most popular characters, despite his limited appearances.
Aside from featuring Shanks, the film is also significant for introducing Uta, the One Piece world’s most popular singer and daughter of the Red Hair pirate. Uta is also the first canon character in the franchise in over a decade.
