Months after its Japanese release, Toei Animation and Crunchyroll have finally released the latest One Piece movie in the US. Upon release, the film was a big hit, enough that One Piece Film: Red beat Black Adam at the US box office during its opening day.

The film’s Thursday preview screenings and Friday opening day totals were higher than the latest DC film, which is an impressive feat for an anime given that Black Adam is a big-budget superhero movie.

One Piece Film: Red is the 15th feature film in the franchise, and it sees Luffy and the Straw Hat Crew attend the concert of Uta, the world’s most popular singer.

Though it is soon revealed by Luffy that Uta is the daughter of the legendary pirate, Shanks.

While Uta is a new character, her connection to Shanks meant that the Red-Haired Emperor plays a big role in the movie.

Given this, it’s no surprise that there was a lot of hype behind the movie ahead of its release.

Upon its release in Japanese cinemas, the film quickly became a big hit as it took home JPY 2.25 billion (USD 16.63 million) during its opening weekend.

Thanks to this, the film became the biggest opening weekend record holder for a One Piece movie.

Soon, the film’s box office success continued as it also became the highest-earning movie ever in the franchise.

Currently, it is also the ninth highest-grossing film of all time in Japan.

In the US, the film also proved to be a big hit. While the film opened in most cinemas on November 4, there were Thursday previews that took place across the US.

In total, the film earned over USD 4.8 million during its opening, according to Box Office Mojo.

For reference, Black Adam’s Friday box office numbers stood at around USD 4.7 million, meaning the new One Piece movie beat DC’s latest film on Friday.

Of course, Black Adam was still the top movie for the whole weekend, but the fact that One Piece Red topped a day at the US box office is a clear indication that the anime fandom in the country is getting bigger and bigger.

One Piece Film: Red is now screening in cinemas across the US, the UK, Canada, and other countries.
