AI art and writers have garnered lots of criticism from creators over the last few months, but this hasn’t stopped One Piece creator Eiichiro Oda from using an AI writer to help write a new manga chapter.

Most creatives have been highly critical of AI generation tools, so it’s surprising that a beloved author such as Oda would try his hand at one.

Of course, this doesn’t mean Oda will pass on writing One Piece to AI as it was more of an interesting and funny experiment.

Eiichiro Oda’s AI Art Experiment

This isn’t the first time that Oda tried out AI art. Back in December, Oda drew an illustration of Rob Lucci in his current CP0 look. Oda then ran it on an AI program, and the results are hilarious.

Instead of simply colorizing the Lucci illustration, the AI turned the fearsome CP0 agent into an anime girl.

While the technology is impressive, it’s quite funny to see a cute girl version of Lucci.

What’s funny is that the AI may have seemingly read Oda’s mind. After all, Oda has done the same when he drew Law turning into a woman while fighting Blackbeard and his crew.

After seeing the AI illustration, Oda was inspired to draw another illustration. This time, it was Luffy reacting to seeing Lucci as a cute anime girl.

Oda’s experiment with AI art is a funny contrast to other esteemed creators.

After all, the likes of Hayao Miyazaki have extremely negative views of AI.

One Piece Manga Chapter by ChatGPT

Recently, Oda did another AI experiment, but this time, he used ChatGPT to help generate ideas for a new One Piece chapter.

Upon receiving the prompt, ChatGPT shared a surprisingly interesting chapter idea that features Nico Robin who is up against a new foe called the King of Shadows.

Oda wasn’t a big fan of this first idea, so he asked for another one. ChatGPT obliged and shared a premise where the Straw Hat Crew faces off against an evil witch to help an alien restore the star of its home planet.

Despite the outlandish premise, Oda loved the idea. Though this is no surprise given that he has created a space storyline in the form of Enel’s Great Space Operations cover story.

Given Oda’s penchant for funny projects like these, it won’t be surprising to see an actual One Piece spin-off with this storyline.

However, we don’t expect AI to take over writing and illustration duties for the series.
