Ron Howard Gives Indefinite Update on Star Wars Solo 2

Following his last statement that a follow-up to Solo: A Star Wars Story is not a priority for Lucasfilm given that it’s entirely a fan-driven campaign, director Ron Howard remains firm that it’s entirely on the company's decision to move forward with the sequel, despite his awareness that the characters deserve a second shot at their narrative.

“I’m not a producer on Solo. I came in in support of the project and for my long relationship with George, Kathy and Larry Kasdan. So I have not even been in conversations about it. One would assume that there’s some characters there that could go much further, but I’m not sure where Disney+ is going with the Galaxy. These shows are not only important to everybody who works on them, but they’re a big bet for the company each and every time.” he explained to The Hollywood Reporter.

Howard further clarified, “They make their choices really carefully, and they want to keep growing and evolving. So I know that’s not really an answer, but there’s a real appetite to understand where Star Wars can take audience members to, in addition to building upon characters and ideas that are already known. But there’s a lot of talent in Solo, and whether I was involved or not, I would love to see some of those characters again.”

Solo: A Star Wars Story (2018) serves as the second Star Wars anthology film after 2016’s Rogue One. It follows the adventures of the iconic smuggler (Alden Ehrenreich), along with Chewbacca, who joins a criminal underworld heist 10 years before the events of the original trilogy.

The film received divided reactions, with it underperforming at the box office, earning just $393.2 million, yet gathering positive reviews from critics who praised the cast, visuals, score, and action sequences. The movie also received a nomination for "Best Visual Effects" at the 91st Academy Awards.

Despite the hazy status of Star Wars: Solo 2, lead actor Alden Ehrenreich, who played the younger Han Solo in the film, expressed interest in returning to play one of the Rebel Alliance's great leaders.

“The story that I did, I really got to be Han Solo at the end,” Ehrenreich told IndieWire. “That's kind of the arc of the story, which I thought was well done. That's the fun part. That's the guy that's the most fun to be. I'd be very happy to [return to the role], but who knows.”
