Nightmare Alley: Teaser Trailer Unveils Guillermo del Toro's Latest Tale

After the awards success of The Shape of Water, fans have been looking forward to seeing what's next on Guillermo del Toro's impressive slate of works. Now, we have our first glimpse of his next film which promises another terrifying tale.

Searchlight Pictures has released the teaser trailer for del Toro's upcoming film Nightmare Alley, a psychological thriller based on the 1946 William Lindsay Gresham novel. Per the studio's official logline, "Stan Carlisle (Bradley Cooper), an ambitious carny with a talent for manipulating people with a few well-chosen words, hooks up with Dr. Lilith Ritter (Cate Blanchett), a psychiatrist who is even more dangerous than he is."

The teaser trailer didn't give us much of a glimpse of what the story is exactly about, but it gave us a look at the world that the film is set in and the main characters who will be the center of the story. The production design and aesthetic look beautiful and it is slightly a reminisce of The Shape of Water. It also has an impression that the film will be more grounded compared to del Toro's previous films, which leaned more on fantasy and the supernatural. This one looks more like a straight-up period drama thriller. Everything that they've shown in the minute-and-a-half teaser is just intriguing.

Del Toro is arguably one of the most imaginative filmmakers today. He is also the director behind such films as Blade II, Hellboy, Pan's Labyrinth, Pacific Rim, and Crimson Peak. He ultimately won an Oscar for The Shape of Water. He is also a producer of TV shows such as The Strain and Netflix's Trollhunters. Besides this film, he is currently working on a stop-motion animated Pinocchio film for Netflix, which is set to be released next year.
