Guillermo del Toro’s Pinocchio Casts Ewan McGregor and David Bradley

It seemed like director Guillermo del Toro had taken a break after he won Oscars for The Shape of Water, but he's now teaming up with Netflix for his own adaptation of Pinocchio. Just in, Netflix has announced the star-studded cast of the stop-motion film and it includes A-listers like Ewan McGregor and Cate Blanchett.

Here's the cast announcement along with a photo of del Toro and the movie's version of Pinocchio:

Netflix has also given us the synopsis for the film:

Set during the rise of Fascism in Mussolini's Italy, PINOCCHIO — a musical directed by del Toro and Mark Gustafson (FANTASTIC MR. FOX) with a score by Alexandre Desplat — is a story of love and disobedience as Pinocchio struggles to live up to his father's expectations.

It's worth noting that this version of Pinocchio will not be kid-friendly, as del Toro had explained back in 2018. This one looks to be based on the book illustrations of Gris Grimly which has a very Tim Burton feel to it.

I have to admit, it's kind of gutsy that del Toro would decide to adapt Pinocchio now, seeing that Disney is also hard at work with their live-action adaptation of the classic. On that end of things, they have Robert Zemeckis (Forrest Gump, Welcome to Marwen) directing with Tom Hanks already cast as Gepetto. I wonder if both films are also looking at a release close to each other.

No release date has been set for del Toro's Pinocchio, but the movie is expected to come out sometime in 2021.
