It has been over half a year since its premiere, and finally, the Nier Automata anime is complete, at least for now. This is because NieR: Automata Ver1.1a is getting a second season, as confirmed by Aniplex following the release of Episode 12.
The show’s second season (or its second cour, as the reveal states) renewal was announced via the show’s official Twitter account as well as a video shared on the Aniplex official YouTube channel.
While it’s not too surprising to see the show get renewed this quickly given the source material’s popularity, it’s a small miracle given the show’s troubled production.

NieR: Automata Ver1.1a Finally Finishes First Cour After Multiple Delays
Originally set to air in the Winter 2023 season, NieR: Automata Ver1.1a only finished its supposed 3-month run yesterday.
This is because the show was one of the most seriously affected by the Winter anime delays.
Earlier this year, lots of shows either got delayed episodes or even got restarted broadcasts in following seasons, as was the case with Kubo Won’t Let Me Be Invisible.
NieR: Automata Ver1.1a was one of the titles that were initially delayed by only a few weeks but soon entered a longer hiatus.
After months of silence, the show was finally confirmed to return with a July 23 broadcast.
Instead of airing its last four episodes every week, it was decided that the last episodes will be released in one go.
Given this, the anime’s first cour is finally complete, though more will come soon given its renewal.

NieR: Automata Ver1.1a Gets Renewed for a Second Season
The renewal of NieR: Automata Ver1.1a for a second cour came via a new trailer, though it does not feature new scenes.
Despite this, fans of the game will likely be familiar with what happens next, based on both the clips chosen for the trailer as well as the last episode’s title.
Specifically, the anime’s 12th episode is titled flowers for m[A]chines – a reference to the game’s first out of five main endings.
Given these, it’s likely that the second cour will begin by retelling the events of the first 12 episodes, albeit from a different perspective. After all, this is what happens in the game.
For now, there’s no word yet on a release date for NieR: Automata Ver1.1a Season 2, though it’s likely not going to premiere any time this year.
