NieR: Automata Ver1.1a is one of the most hyped anime in the ongoing Winter 2023 anime lineup. The anime mainly revolves around two characters named 2B and 9S who are tasked to fight a long battle against Machine Lifeforms. But do 2B and 9S become a couple in NieR: Automata Ver1.1a?
Before we analyze their relationship, let’s learn a bit more about who they are in the Nier world.

Who Are 2B and 9S in NieR: Automata?
YoRHa No. 2 Type B or 2B is the protagonist and an android made to fight the Machine Lifeforms that invaded Earth and forced humans to evacuate. She is an all-purpose battle android that is tasked to be part of the YoRHa infantry.
She appears cold because of her past experiences and is extremely focused on fighting and completing her missions.
Interestingly, one of 2B's goals is to make sure that 9S does not find out the details of Project YoRHa. And for this, 2B kills 9S multiple times and even wipes off his memory.
On the other hand, YoRHa No. 9 Type S or 9S is a scanner-type android that specializes in investigations and hacking into machines to extract intel. He has the ability to fight but he mostly deals with gathering key information.
As a scanner, he is quite curious about things. He loves to explore and learn more about machines and technology.
Due to his inquisitive nature, he attempts to dig deeper into the dark secrets of YoRHa.

Are 2B and 9S Siblings?
Now, in terms of their relationship as androids, it is unclear and pretty open to interpretation. Several fans believe that 9S is more like a little brother to 2B.
However, there are many who believe that their relationship is sprinkled with romance and that they are definitely not siblings.
So, let’s dive in and find out if the androids do become a couple.

Do 2B and 9S End Up Together?
In the first episode of the Nier: Automata anime, after 2B’s unit is destroyed, she is instructed to meet with 9S and gather terrain intel. This is the first time 2B encounters 9S, and although she initially appears tough and serious, she somehow seems to put her guard down around 9S.
Meanwhile, 9S is excited to finally have a partner, and he wants to impress her with his skills.
2B was initially holding herself back, but she started caring about him as they spent more time together.
This is evident when the Goliath Machine Lifeform almost kills 9S and 2B rushes in to save him.
She looks frustrated when she is unable to help him and later goes on to destroy the giant machine.
Toward the end of the episode, their memories get reset. And as soon as 2B regains consciousness, she rushes to look for 9S.
2B says to herself that if she was allowed to make a wish, she would ask for his happiness.
At this point, it seems that 2B is falling in love with 9S, but there is a twist. It turns out that 9S doesn’t remember anything as he was only able to back up her data.
As the series progresses, we will learn more about their relationship as they battle the deadly machines.
