The Nier Automata game and anime have several key differences but not just in the story. 2B voice actress Yui Ishikawa recently shared that NieR: Automata Ver1.1a is also more brutal than the game, especially in its latest episode.

In her latest interview with Animate Times, Ishikawa shared her thoughts on how the anime is progressing.

Along with revealing the difference in how she voice acts in the anime, she also shared how she thinks the anime is crueler than the game in certain scenes.

The Nier Automata game was a big hit when it was released back in 2017.

While Square Enix has yet to work on a sequel, Nier fans at least got some mobile game spinoffs, as well as this new anime adaptation.

While the anime promises to be a faithful adaptation, there are some changes to make it a fresher experience for those who played the game.

For instance, while the first episode was almost the same as in the game, the next two episodes featured a brand-new character.

Because of these differences, the game’s voice cast returned to voice their respective characters in the anime.

This wasn’t just to properly sync voices though, as the cast was instructed a bit differently for the anime.

In the interview, Yui Ishikawa shared that she had more ad-libbed sequences in the anime compared to the game.

She also says that her 2B performance in the game was a bit more robotic, partly due to how the recording sessions went.

Ishikawa also went into detail about how she perceives the game compared to the new anime.

She said that while the game has left a strong impression on her, she feels that the anime is even more brutal.

That’s not to say that the anime is more violent. It’s just that the way some scenes were shown seemed crueler.

For example, the scene where 9S kills two machines seemed more disturbing in the anime as 9S’ staging and expression made it more brutal to watch.

While still impactful, the game’s framing of the scene wasn’t as upfront.

We’re only just four episodes into the anime, and there are likely to be more sequences that will be different compared to the game.

NieR: Automata Ver1.1a's next episode will be streamed this weekend on Crunchyroll.
