Who is Nick Fury?
Nick Fury is the former director of S.H.I.E.L.D. and the one who formed the Avengers. Fury first appeared in the post-credits scene of Iron Man (2008), and the rest of his appearances before The Avengers (2012) were more about him forming the Avengers.
In Captain America: The Winter Soldier (2014), Fury's life was in danger due to HYDRA taking over S.H.I.E.L.D. Fury faked his own death, but came back in Avengers: Age of Ultron (2015) to help the Avengers stop Ultron.
However, Fury was among those who disintegrated during the Blip. But before he disappeared, Fury was able to send a distress signal to Captain Marvel.
In Captain Marvel (2019), we see a younger version of Fury. Carol Danvers/Captain Marvel is the first superhero Fury encounters, and this leads him to a path of working with heroes.
It is also in Captain Marvel where Fury meets the Skrulls, including Talos, who’s one of the main characters in Secret Invasion.
Secret Invasion reminds us that Nick Fury and Carol Danvers made a promise to the Skrulls to find them a new planet.

What Happened to Nick Fury After the Blip?
Nick Fury was among those who disintegrated during the Blip. After the Blip, Fury attends Tony Stark’s funeral.
The next time we see “Fury” is in Spider-Man: Far From Home (2019). “Fury” gives the E.D.I.T.H. glasses to Peter Parker/Spider-Man.
However, in the post-credits scene of the film, it is revealed that it was Talos impersonating Nick Fury all along. The real Nick Fury was taking a vacation in space.
From the post-credits of Spider-Man: Far From Home, we know that Nick Fury was in space after the events that occurred in Avengers: Endgame (2019). He must have gone to space after Stark’s funeral.
In Secret Invasion, Fury decides to come back to Earth to prevent a Skrull invasion, but what we now see is a different kind of Nick Fury.
Secret Invasion highlights Fury’s changes after the Blip. Maria Hill tells him that the Fury she knew was always three steps ahead and that he was never the same after the Blip.
It is also revealed that Fury was no longer in contact with her despite working closely with her for several years. Hill also tells Fury that he is not ready for the threat they are facing.
Talking about a different side of Nick Fury, actor Samuel L. Jackson said in an interview with Entertainment Weekly that Secret Invasion gave him an “opportunity to explore something other than the badassery of who Nick Fury is.”
And in an interview with Screen Rant, Jackson talked about how the Blip affected Nick Fury:
“The fact that he's been gone for the amount of time he's been gone, what the Blip meant to him, and how he was affected by it. Nick Fury, being the impervious know-all, be-all of everything... Something actually shook him… all of a sudden when this Blip thing happens, it throws him, and he stays gone.”
Why Was Nick Fury in Space Before Secret Invasion?
In The Marvels trailer, we see Nick Fury in “S.A.B.E.R. Space Station” working with Monica Rambeau. Secret Invasion tells us that Fury is on S.A.B.E.R. “building up the most complex aerospace defense system in the history of mankind.”
So, we know that before Secret Invasion, Nick Fury was in space building S.A.B.E.R. We do not know much about S.A.B.E.R. yet, only that it is led by Fury.
S.A.B.E.R. explains why Nick Fury was in space. But there's another reason why Fury was in space before Secret Invasion.
In an interview with Vanity Fair, Jackson said that one reason why Fury was in space was because he was trying to process everything that happened and “what his place in the world is.”
“Even Nick Fury can be shaken, you know? He’s up there trying to process what the fuck happened, you know? And what his place in the world is. The death of Iron Man, the death of Black Widow — with that stuff going on, he just kind of checked out,” Jackson said.
So, Nick Fury was in space before Secret Invasion because he was building S.A.B.E.R., and at the same time, trying to process things.
