New Overwatch Story Reveals That Soldier 76 is Gay

It looks like Tracer isn't the only Overwatch character proudly waving that rainbow-colored flag, as a new short story has revealed that Soldier 76 is gay as well. The generic-looking character who plays like a Call of Duty main has been a favorite to many for some time, so fans are likely happy about this reveal since it does give us more insight on him. Considering how the game has absolutely no story whatsoever, seeing tidbits like this helps mitigate that.

Fans found out about the character's sexual identity in a short prose story called Bastet, which has Ana encounter Soldier after a tussle with former friend Reaper. As she nurses him back to health, Ana notices some old pictures that Soldier was rummaging through, including some with an old boyfriend named Vincent.

This ends up being bittersweet for Soldier 76 as it's revealed that Vincent now has a family, while Soldier is still continuing the good fight in Overwatch. Some fans were debating if he's gay, bisexual, pansexual, or the other queer terms but the game's lead writer Michael Chu confirmed that Soldier is indeed gay.

Thanks for all the messages about "Bastet"!

Jack and Vincent were in a romantic relationship many years ago. Both identify as gay. ❤️

While the reveal is nice for fans, it is kind of sad how this won't affect the game anyway. Granted, some homophobic fans might stop using him because of their bigotry but this revelation doesn't affect the game because Overwatch has no overarching story. This is a game where you shoot each other to win so it's sad that this reveal doesn't mean much in the long run.

Then again, there are several LGBTQ characters in fighting games and you could argue that their sexuality doesn't mean much either. However, some fighting games do have story modes so they have a better opportunity to flesh out their characters, even if it's in a minimal way.

Don't worry, we still have Ellie from The Last of Us.

Overwatch is available now on PS4, Xbox One, and PC.
