Ahead of the show’s premiere this March, Netflix and TV Tokyo recently announced the main cast members and release date of the live-action Kimi ni Todoke series.

This upcoming live-action show is the latest Japanese production from Netflix, and it is based on the anime/manga series of the same name that was a big hit from the late 2000s to the 2010s.

Anime fans from the late 2000s will probably be familiar with Kimi ni Todoke thanks to the anime adaptation by Production I.G that ran from 2009 to 2011.

Set in Hokkaido, the series follows Sawako Kuronuma, a quiet and modest student who is nicknamed “Sadako” for her resemblance to the character from The Ring.

Because of this, Sawako finds it hard to make friends. Though she soon becomes friends with a popular student named Shota Kazehaya. This leads to Sawako gradually opening up and making friends.

The manga series ended back in 2017, and since then, the series has still been considered one of the best romance series among many manga readers.

Given this, it’s no surprise that Netflix picked up the series for its next live-action adaptation. This is likely part of its strategy of making more Japanese live-action content.

This follows the success of shows like First Love, Alice in Borderland, and The Makanai: Cooking for the Maiko House. The latter two are adaptations of popular manga titles.

Kimi ni Todoke Live-Action Cast, Release Date

The Kimi ni Todoke Netflix live-action series is directed by Takehiko Shinjo and Takeo Kikuchi, two veterans of anime live-action adaptations.

They have worked on the live-action Your Lie in April and Tokyo Ghoul, respectively.

Previously, it was announced that Sara Minami was cast as Sawako. Opposite her is Oji Suzuka as Kazehaya.

Now, more new cast members were announced, which include:

  • Kaito Sakurai as Ryu Sanada
  • Rinka Kumada as Ayane Yano
  • Riho Nakamura as Chizuru Yoshida
  • Naho Toda as Yoko Kuronuma
  • Hiroyuki Hirayama as Kitao Kuronuma
  • Shohei Miura as Kazuichi Arai

This isn’t the first Kimi ni Todoke live-action adaptation though. There was a movie that was released back in 2010 starring Mikako Tabe and Haruma Miura.

The new live-action Kimi ni Todoke will be released on Netflix worldwide on March 30, 2023.

While Netflix usually releases all episodes in one go, this might get a weekly release as it is a co-production with TV Tokyo.
