Ms. America's Creators are Giving Her a Solo Comic, But It's Not a Marvel Comic

Fans have been clamoring for a solo series for the Marvel hero America Chavez, who goes by Ms America (originally it was "Miss America"). Well, now they're finally at title starring America penned by her creators, but it's not a Marvel series, The Hollywood Reporter reports. It's an Image comic about a different-but-very-similar character named America Vasquez.

America Vasquez will star in Image's All-American Comix title, which will be launched in 2017. The comic will be written by Joe Casey and drawn by Nick Dragonetta. This same team was responsible for the debut of America Chavez in Marvel's Vengeance #1 in 2011. You can read the syopsis below:

You wanted it! You got it! She is a hero for our time — and the time is NOW! A superpowered champion of the oppressed, AMERICA VASQUEZ is the one you've been waiting for! And this may be her greatest adventure of all. When she is confronted with the hidden secrets of the universe, you won't believe the cosmic truth she uncovers! Issue #1 hits — and we do mean HITS — in 2017 from Image Comics!

The solicit seems to be a very pointed jab at Marvel for not giving the fans the Ms. America solo title they wanted. The use of "the time is NOW!" even seems to be a reference to Marvel NOW!, the latest Marvel relaunch and new line of titles. Like America Chavez, Vasquez looks to be a young Latina woman who really likes punching things.

It will remain to be seen if there are other similarities, like whether she will be a lesbian like her Marvel counterpart Casey originally depicted her in a relationship with a man, but the America Chavez Marvel fans love doesn't swing that way. The character actually didn't really take off in popularity until she was featured in Kieran Gillen's Young Avengers title. It will be interesting to see whether the new title will take inspiration from that version of the character or their own.

I'm pleased and amused to hear Ms. America is getting title in some form, but the whole thing is so blatant I have to wonder if Marvel will consider legal action. It would be weird to have creators sued over their own character, but Marvel does own her. What do you think of the news? Will you be looking forward to the new title?
