One of the coolest things we saw in The Last of Us Episode 7 was undoubtedly Ellie and Riley playing Mortal Kombat II at the mall. After all, it was awesome to see the two simply having fun. So it's no surprise that Ed Boon is loving how the HBO series has paid tribute to the game he co-created.

In The Last of Us Episode 7, Ellie reminisced about the time she spent with Riley at an abandoned mall. One of the "wonders" Riley presented was a visit to the mall arcade where she showed Ellie how to play Mortal Kombat II.

It was an awesome tribute to the game and nobody appreciated it more than Ed Boon, who confirmed his delight in a tweet.

"I don’t remember the last time I was hooked on a show as much as THE LAST OF US," Boon wrote. "So seeing Mortal Kombat featured as prominently as it was last night was a huge thrill."

We're loving Ed Boon's reaction to The Last of Us Episode 7 and it looks like we're not the only ones who were hoping to find out what he thinks about the scene. Series co-showrunner Neil Druckmann was quick to retweet the post and thank Boon for watching the show.

"Was waiting for you to see it! Thanks for making all the times I skipped school so awesome!" Druckmann wrote.

It's a cool interaction between the two game creators and once again a great reminder that Mortal Kombat II was one of the best titles in history. With that in mind, we're glad that The Last of Us didn't pass up the chance to make a reference to the video game.

In related news, Mortal Kombat 12 is said to be in the works. Stay tuned for more updates on this story.

The Last of Us Episode 7 is titled Left Behind and is now streaming on HBO Max.
