Jenna Ortega made waves when she played everyone's favorite The Addams Family character, Wednesday. Her role in her new movie might get the opposite reaction. But we can't help but wonder is Miller's Girl a true story?
This article is a spoiler-free look into Ortega's upcoming movie with Martin Freeman. Here's what we know about the film's premise and whether it's based on a true story.
What is Miller's Girl Story About?
Miller's Girl is Ortega's upcoming film where she stars opposite Martin Freeman. The film explores the possibility of a student-teacher romance between the two characters.
The official synopsis of the film reads:
“A talented young writer embarks on a creative odyssey when her teacher assigns a project that entangles them both in an increasingly complex web. As lines blur and their lives intertwine, professor and protégé must confront their darkest selves while straining to preserve their individual sense of purpose and the things they hold most dear.”
Ortega plays the role of Cairo Sweet, a young student who gets too friendly with her creative writing professor, Jonathan Miller (played by Freeman).
Sensing the possibility of a scandal, Miller rejects her advances. But it looks like Cairo can't accept getting turned down.
She turns the tables on her professor, which causes tension to build.
Is Miller's Girl Based On a True Story?
Although there isn't any word yet on whether Miller's Girl is based on a true story, it's not an uncommon occurrence.
In fact, the subject of the movie has been toyed around for years. Some famous films that share the same premise include Election, Notes on a Scandal, and even Cruel Intentions.
At this point, we can say that Miller's Girl is not a true story. The nature of the story, however, has happened multiple times in real life. But as far as the characters and storyline of Miller's Girl, these things are purely a work of fiction.
How Jenna Ortega's Fans Are Reacting to Miller's Girl
Even though Miller's Girl is not a true story, fans have already been criticizing the film. This is because the film's trailer paints Ortega's character as the antagonist. Meanwhile, Freeman's character is being shown as her unfortunate victim.
The two-minute trailer shows Cairo making allegations that Miller raped her. This caused him to tarnish his job and his reputation simply because he turned her down.
At this point, we're seriously hoping there is a twist to the story that will redeem Ortega's role. Otherwise, this could very well be her most controversial project to date.
We'll have to wait until January 26th to watch Miller's Girl before we make any presumptions.
