Meghan Markle just dropped the second episode of her podcast, Archetypes, this week. And this time around, she interviewed her girl crush, Mariah Carey. The two women talked about the positive and negative connotations of the term “diva” in the episode that’s fittingly called, The Duality of Diva With Mariah Carey.
Mariah Carey Called Meghan Markle A ‘Diva’ But Explained Why
During their conversation, Mariah Carey jokingly called Meghan Markle, a “diva.” And according to Life & Style, the Duchess of Sussex was offended by her idol’s remark.
Carey then explained that being called a diva isn’t always as negative as some people might think.
“It’s the visual. A lot of it’s the visual. Let’s pretend that you weren’t so beautiful and didn’t have the whole thing and didn’t often have gorgeous ensembles. You wouldn’t get maybe as much diva-styling,” the singer said.

Meghan Markle Clarified What Mariah Carey Meant When The Singer Called Her A Diva
Markle then expounded on what Carey had just said, and it was evident that she already understood what the “Always Be My Baby” singer was saying.
“When she said diva, she was talking about the way that I dress, the posture, the clothing, the quote-unquote ‘fabulousness’ as she sees it. She meant diva as a compliment. She meant it as chic, as aspirational,” Markle explained.
Mariah Carey Says The Term ‘Diva’ Has Positive And Negative Connotations
Markle also asked Carey if she thinks the term “diva” is positive or negative. And the latter said that she thinks it’s both.
“I know the origin of the word, but then I know as I was growing up as I said, my mom was going, talking about a friend or something: ‘So and so is very much the diva.’ I didn’t know if that was bad [or] good—that’s how she spoke. As things evolved the past whatever — 20 years, I don’t know numbers—it became like: a diva for me, they mean, you’re a successful woman usually. It’s not OK for you to be a boss. It’s not OK for you to be a strong woman. You should be diminutive,” Carey explained.
After their interview, Prince Harry’s wife told her listeners that she saw Carey’s remark as a hiccup during their conversation.
“You couldn’t see me obviously, but I started to sweat a little bit. I started squirming in my chair in this private revolt. My mind genuinely was just spinning with what nonsense she must have read or clicked on to make her say that. I just kept thinking at that moment, ‘Was my girl crush coming to a quick demise? Does she actually not see me?’” she said.
Markle will be releasing a total of 12 episodes this season on Archetypes. But as of writing, it’s still unclear who her next guest would be.
