The Flash became one of the biggest flops of the summer season this year as it massively underperformed at the box office and received mixed reviews from the critics and the audience.

It was certainly the kind of result that Warner Bros. did not want, especially since its parent company's CEO David Zaslav and DC Studios co-chairman James Gunn hailed it as one of the best superhero movies of all time.

There are a lot of factors that you can consider regarding why the film underperformed whether it's superhero fatigue, the public's loss of interest in DCEU films, or the audience simply didn't like it and it warranted a bad word of mouth.

Despite all that, the film still has some fans around the corner and one of them is someone who has directed superhero movies before and is also in talks to helm an upcoming DCU movie.

Speaking with the Happy Sad Confused podcast (via Heroic Hollywood), X-Men: First Class and Kick-Ass director Matthew Vaughn praised The Flash for being "special" and its "unique filmmaking."

He also gave a shoutout to its director Andy Muschietti as he thought that he did a great job on successfully pulling off the film.

"What really freaked me out was that I really enjoyed The Flash. I thought it was a really good film... And it died at the box office, right? And I’m like, Wait, hold on, this is a good movie. What happened? And I don’t know whether that was superhero fatigue; you’ve just seen it done," Vaughn said.

"So even now that we’ve made it well, there was some really, really complicated, hard, and quite special, unique filmmaking in that film. Which I don’t think Muschietti got enough credit for what they pulled off."

Despite the film's underwhelming box office performance and divisive reviews, it is interesting to see that there is someone like Vaughn who was able to appreciate it and perhaps he was able to relate to what Muschietti did since he has directed a superhero movie as well.

Whether you agree or disagree with Vaughn's review of the film, it is still all subjective in the end and we have to respect his appreciation of the movie. After all, a lot of people worked hard behind the scenes to make it all happen.

Now, all eyes are on whether Vaughn will end up agreeing to join the DCU and direct a movie. Fans are most likely going to support it since we have seen in his past works that he is capable of directing a solid superhero movie.
