We last saw Ultron being defeated by Earth’s Mightiest Heroes back in the Infinity Saga after going up against the Avengers and eventually turned against by Wanda Maximoff after losing her twin brother in battle. However, after Ultron’s appearance in What If…? led many MCU fans to believe that the villain is set to return in the MCU someday.
According to the “trusted sources” of the Tales from the mod queue from the Marvel Studios Spoilers subreddit, James Spader is rumored to reprise his role as Ultron in Armor Wars. While it remains unclear on what exactly his role is — whether acting as the main villain or not — the ending of Age of Ultron seemingly hinted at his return, with a past rumor indicating his program just happened to remain “dormant” in the meantime.
It is important to take this news with a grain of salt, especially since Spader last portrayed Ultron canonically in 2015’s Avengers: Age of Ultron and Marvel Studios and Disney have yet to confirm this officially.

Should the rumor deem to be true eventually, Armor Wars is reportedly set to feature Harrison Ford’s President Thaddeus “Thunderbolt” Ross alongside Don Cheadle’s James Rhodes aka War Machine. Ford’s “villainous role” has yet to be confirmed for Armor Wars, so there is a chance that Ultron will be the one to take the reins in the film. Hence, the title, “Armor Wars”.
Robert Downey Jr.’s potential MCU return may be frowned upon by fans, however, the continuous utilization and abuse of Stark Industries’ technology will likely play a role here in bringing back Ultron somehow, and resurrect him back to his initial purpose of complete chaos and destruction of the universe.
Regardless of how Marvel Studios could plan Ultron’s return, this only spells trouble for the new developing Avengers without Tony Stark. Meanwhile, Marvel Studios’ Armor Wars has yet to receive a firm release date.
