Marvel’s The Defenders is Getting Its Own Comic

Brian Michael Bendis may have said goodbye to Guardians of the Galaxy's comic series. However, the prolific comic book writer made good on his promise of other projects in store.

The Hollywood Reporter has announced that Bendis is teaming up with artist David Marquez for a comic series run of The Defenders. All of the Netflix cast members included in the TV show of the same name, such as Luke Cage, Jessica Jones, Daredevil, and Iron Fist, will find themselves with a comic book counterpart.

As far as the chicken or the egg argument of which of the comic book or the TV show really triggered the other, Bendis pointed out that a comic book for The Defenders was already in the plans the moment he had finished his run as writer of New Avengers back in 2012. Great timing, as with Marvel's good planning, just adds the fact that the Netflix show will now have a complementary comic book to go along with it.

Bendis pretty much had a hand in the main heroes of The Defenders, but with the new comic, the writer will also be taking the show's tone and slant in mind when creating the stories of The Defenders in print.

"I wanted to do a sprawling, Godfather-like epic at the street level of the Marvel Universe, really putting out hooks down and creating a modern, elaborate organized crime story that is different than what has gone before, but builds on everything that has happened to these characters, as individuals or as a team, and putting them in the hardest battle for the street that anyone can imagine."

The good thing about The Defenders is that Bendis hopes it will be an ongoing series, instead of the more recently more common way of scribing comic books for a particular number of issues.

The Defenders comic series doesn't have a release date yet. However, its Netflix counterpart is scheduled sometime this year.
