Marvel's New Warriors Showrunner Reveals Being ‘Too Gay’ Led to its Cancelation

Not a lot of Marvel fans are aware of this, but once upon a time, long before the Disney+ expansion, Marvel was actually set to release a New Warriors television show which would have introduced characters like Squirrel Girl, Mister Immortal, and M.O.D.O.K. The project was announced in 2017 and actually filmed a pilot but the show never aired.

There have been rumblings a few years back that New Warriors failed to secure a TV deal which is cited as the main reason for its cancelation but apparently, that's not the actual case. Four years after the show got shelved, showrunner Kevin Beigel finally revealed what led to its premature demise and according to him, an unnamed Marvel TV executive was responsible for the project getting canned altogether before it could even truly take off.

In a now-deleted tweet (via Phase Zero), the New Warriors producer explained the main reason why the promising series got canned. He wrote: "There's a show we wrote a few years ago. It was very proudly gay. A singular power that be killed the show. Because it was too gay. A rich, straight, Brentwood turd. He got fired for being vile at his company. We, on the other hand, live. #NewWarriors."

The fate the supposed New Warriors show suffered was quite unfortunate for sure. However, it would've premiered during a pretty crucial time in mainstream media because let's face it, the LGBTQ+ movement wasn't as strong several years back as it is today. That being said, hopefully Marvel Studios actually picks up the series and gives it new life because I think it would've been an interesting show. Of course, the ball is in Kevin Feige's court but you can never say never.

Meanwhile, the Marvel Cinematic Universe's Phase Four shows are streaming exclusively on Disney+.
