Marvel Contest of Champions Welcomes Power Player Phoenix

There's quite the power coming to Marvel Contest of Champions. X-Men's renowned redhead Jean Grey, also known as the most powerful X-Men Phoenix, is coming to change the game.

Marvel talked to art director Gabriel Frizzera and systems designer Simon Cameron on what players can expect with the new abilities coming with omega-level mutant and her Phoenix Force.

"The Collector tried to play it safe by brining ‘pre-Phoenix' teenage Jean Grey, but M.O.D.O.K.'s experiments unlocked the transformation and caused a lot of trouble for the mutants in The Contest."

And that's why Marvel Contest of Champions will be seeing the full-fledged Phoenix, whose powers go beyond mere telepathy and telekinesis. But what's interesting about this Phoenix is that she was created by the combination of ISO-8/Terrigen, so there may be more than just mind-havoc and cosmic flames in her arsenal.

Players may also want to be ready to handle a character who "can never truly die." Given the name Phoenix, the character has a sort of Wild Card power that will allow her to cheat death. What happens is that she will get a few seconds of invulnerability following a fatal blow.

But it is also possible for her to regenerate, depending on how strong her connection is to the Phoenix Force. This is a wild draw that can happen once every fight. A big part of this Wild Card is the player's ability to control just how much connection with the Phoenix Force is allowed, since the use of her abilities can either create or consume this connection.

Phoenix has already joined the roster, so players can already check her out in her own arena.
