Birds of Prey Sequel Without Harley Quinn Rumored to Be in the Works

The 2020 film Birds of Prey might not be a huge box office hit, but it was still received well for its fresh style, fun action, and the story's focus on Harley Quinn. There have been rumors and whispers about its potential sequel, with some suggesting that it would focus on Harley and Poison Ivy's relationship. Then a while ago, there was a report that a Black Canary spinoff film is in development on HBO Max. Now, it seems like a sequel is actually in the works but it would be missing one key figure.

According to The Hashtag Show, Warner Bros. has greenlit a Birds of Prey sequel, but it wouldn't feature Margot Robbie's Harley Quinn. However, Jurnee Smollett's Black Canary is expected to return. There's also a possibility that Mary Elizabeth Winstead's Huntress and Rosie Perez's Renee Montoya would also appear. They also indicated that Batgirl might be appearing in the sequel, with the likelihood of Leslie Grace playing her as well.

In addition, The Calculator is reportedly going to be the villain along with his created robot assassin Burnrate, who will appear in the third act. There's also no director attached for the project as of now.

This news hasn't been officially announced by the studio or reported by the major trades so we have to take this with a grain of salt. If it is true at all, it is interesting to hear that they are developing a Birds of Prey sequel given the disappointing box office results of the first film. The report didn't say that it's for HBO Max so the assumption is that it will be a theatrical release. If that's the case, there is a possibility that they will do it with a lower budget.

Doing a Birds of Prey sequel without Harley Quinn might be a risk since the character is popular and perhaps the reason why there were people who tuned in to see the first film. It would be interesting to see how it will do well without her. But then since Batgirl might also be appearing, she could be the one who can take the interest of the public to see it. It would be interesting to see where the development of this project goes.
