The Series Gets A Movie With Luther: The Fallen Sun!

The award-winning television series, Luther, will be having its reimagination in film where Idris Elba will reprise his role as John Luther in Luther: The Fallen Sun which will be having a limited theatrical release before coming out on Netflix.

Luther is a British television series with five seasons created by Neil Cross. It ran from 2010 to 2019 before securing its own film, Luther: The Fallen Sun, which marks the return of the titular character.

Netflix released a save the date video for the titles that are arriving on the streaming platform this year and that includes Luther: The Fallen Sun which will be coming out on March 10, 2023, marking the return Idris Elba as the titular role.

Luther: The Fallen Sun serves as the continuation of the series, Luther. It will be released in select cinemas on February 24, 2023 in the US and UK. After almost two weeks, the movie will then come out on Netflix internationally.

Luther: The Fallen Sun is not suitable for kids as it has been given a Rated R for violence, language, and some sexual scenes which may not be suitable for children.

Luther: The Fallen Sun will be the return of Idris Elba as John Luther, the detective chief inspector full of brilliance but has been disgraced after being framed for a murder he didn't even commit. His associate in the film will be played by Cynthia Erivo.

Andy Serkis will be gracing Luther: The Fallen Sun as David Robey, a tech billionaire who doubles as a serial killer through the use of his surveillance technology in order to manipulate civilians and kill them. Serkis will be the villain of the movie.

Speaking with Total Film, Andy Serkis teased his character in Luther: The Fallen Sun, "When I first read the script, I almost wanted to throw it in the bin and have a shower. I don’t think I’ve come across anything quite as dark for a long time."

Serkis added, "I thought: ‘In fact, do I really actually at this point in the world and time and my life, want to go down this particular rabbit hole of something that’s so hard to fathom in humanity?'"

Also in the cast are Dermot Crowley as DSU Martin Schenk who previously worked with Luther as his superintendent, Less Liaudin, Ruth Wilson, Lauryn Ajufo as Anya, Henry Hereford as Brian Lee, and Natasha Patel as Lydia Deng.

Luther: The Fallen Sun marks the return of the creator of the series, Neil Cross, as he pens the screenplay for the movie. Cross will also be one of the producers alongside Peter Chernin, Idris Elba, Jenno Topping, and David Ready.

Jamie Payne sits at the director's chair for Luther: The Fallen Sun. The cinematography is helmed by Larry Smith, with Justine Wright as the editor. The music on the movie will be by Lorne Balfe. It is a collaboration with BBC Film and Chernin Entertainment.

The whole concept of Luther: The Fallen Sun was first brought into the surface in August 2013 when Neil Cross revealed that he had a script written for a prequel. Then, in July 2020, Idris Elba said he doesn't have plans for the series, but is interested in a movie.

Luther: The Fallen Sun has been confirmed to be under production in September 2021 which will come out on Netflix and in November of the same year, Idris Elba confirmed that they already started filming in London and Belguim.

The official synopsis of Luther: The Fallen Sun is as follows:

"In Luther: The Fallen Sun — an epic continuation of the award-winning television saga reimagined for the film — a gruesome serial killer is terrorizing London while brilliant but disgraced detective John Luther (Idris Elba) sits behind bars. Haunted by his failure to capture the cyber psychopath who now taunts him, Luther decides to break out of prison to finish the job by any means necessary."

From the synopsis itself, one could deduce that it will be following the story of Luther who will be getting out of prison to right a wrong from his past and extend to great lengths on how he would get the job done, possibly even resorting to means that are under the table.

With Andy Serkis as the villain, David Robey, it is expected that the movie will be a great crime drama film given the actor's expertise in taking up villainous roles. Also, he's a very effective adversary with his range in acting.
