While we know a few details about the Han Solo spin-off film that Chris Miller and Phil Lord are directing such as who's playing the young Han Solo (Alden Ehrenreich) and who's writing it (Lawrence Kasdan and his son, Jon), they haven't released details on the story that will focused on the character's origins, but if the latest rumor for the film is true, its early draft may be considered to be the best screenplay of any Star Wars film.
According to StarWarsNewsNet, they received a tip from one of their readers about Star Wars concept artist Iain McCaig discussing the new film at a conference in New Zealand. McCaig reportedly said that Lawrence Kasdan penned an early draft of the Han Solo screenplay before he was hired to work on The Force Awakens, and that's most likely to be the draft described here (paraphrased from one of the attendees):
"By far the best Star Wars script, and one of the best scripts period, that I have ever read. I laughed, I cried, I did all the things you should do when reading a good script. You're in for a treat."
It's possible that the quote is fabricated, so take this as a grain of salt, but I won't be surprised if this turns out to be true, considering that Kasdan knows the character well enough to pen a compelling story for him, and that he's the writer behind Indiana Jones: Raiders of the Lost Ark. Even if this sincerely came from McCaig, some fans might not agree with his opinion, but knowing that Kasdan is involved in this project, I have high hopes for it. Hopefully, directors Phil Lord and Chris Miller (The LEGO Movie) will give us a preview of its story and/or reveal their spin-off's official title in Star Wars Celebration Europe 2016.
The untitled Han Solo-focused Star Wars spin-off film is set to release in theaters on May 25, 2018.
