The second season of Loki finally made its premiere last Thursday night and the responses so far have been mostly positive from both critics and fans. A lot of them are happy to see the God of Mischief return for another hijink in the TVA.

It is also clear from the get-go that the new season will explore Loki's dynamic with the TVA gang even further as well as expand what we know of the organization and the chaos of the multiverse as a result of the branched timelines that were created.

Considering that the MCU is in the midst of the Multiverse Saga and they have a lot more explaining to do about the multiverse problem that will culminate in Avengers: Secret Wars, this new season is certainly going to be pivotal and perhaps lay out the foundation of the rest of the saga.

However, despite being part of an overall arc of the franchise's current saga, it looks like the new season still received unprecedented leeway for shaping this chapter.

Speaking with Collider, Loki executive producer Kevin Wright opened up about the creative freedom that they got from Marvel Studios when they were making the second season.

"The one headline we got from Kevin [Feige] coming out of Season 1 was, 'I love this world. I want to see more of it, and I want to meet more people there.' It felt like we were dealing with a smaller kind of corner of this organization," he said.

"From there, it was basically a mandate to go further, push it further, lean more into the drama, lean more into the world, and just build. And frankly, Season 1 was that way, too."

Wright continued, "We've been given a lot of creative freedom and all of the filmmakers who have come in and collaborated with us on the show have been given a lot of leeway to kind of put our mark on it."

Considering that Marvel Studios is known for having mandates on producing its films and TV shows and their process is more controlled than anything else within the Hollywood ecosystem, it is surprising that this new season received this unprecedented leeway that is unheard of at this point.

The premiere episode somehow did give an impression that the writers and directors were allowed to do the creative direction that they wanted since it felt unique from the rest of the MCU and it was more standalone despite the higher stakes of the multiverse.

It is interesting to see where they will go for the rest of the season and how they will push the boundaries even further, especially as the multiverse continues to become more complicated with the endless branched timelines.
