With the success of The Super Mario Bros. Movie which became this year's sleeper hit, it was only a matter of time before Nintendo capitalized on the growing popularity of films based on successful video game titles.
Now, the long-overdue adaptation of The Legend of Zelda is finally happening and an even better news is that it's actually going to be a live-action project.
This week, the gaming giant delighted fans on social media following the announcement from creator and game developer Shigeru Miyamoto that Hyrule will be explored on the big screen.
Nintendo and Sony Working on Live-Action Legend of Zelda Film Project
On the official X (formerly Twitter) handle of Nintendo, Miyamoto delivered the exciting news, revealing that he's been working with Marvel Studios founder and Spider-Man producer Avi Arad.
In a post, Miyamoto wrote: "This is Miyamoto. I have been working on the live-action film of The Legend of Zelda for many years now with Avi Arad-san, who has produced many mega hit films."
"I have asked Avi-san to produce this film with me, and we have now officially started the development of the film with Nintendo itself heavily involved in the production. It will take time until its completion, but I hope you look forward to seeing it."
Variety reports that the film will be directed by Wes Ball who helmed the Maze Runner trilogy. Jurassic World's Derek Connolly is also set to pen the screenplay with Miyamoto co-producing.
