The Super Mario Bros. Movie Producer Confirms More Nintendo-Based Films Are Coming

The Super Mario Bros. Movie has been smashing a lot of box office records ever since its debut in theaters earlier this month. It is now projected to join the billion-dollar club very soon as it continues to dominate the box office worldwide.

With the huge success that it's been getting, a lot of fans have been wondering about what's next for the franchise or whether Nintendo will do an adaptation of some of its other properties into other feature films as well.

In a recent interview with Nikkei (via Video Game Chronicles), The Super Mario Bros. Movie producer and the original game creator Shigeru Miyamoto was asked about the future of the franchise where he revealed that they are planning to do more movies based on other Nintendo characters.

"Please keep an eye on our next production. Nintendo is like a talent agency. We have many other entertainers (on our roster)," he said.

"There are various ways to develop characters (for the screen), including characters that are suitable for film and characters that are well known."

Miyamoto declined to reveal the characters that they are planning to adapt into films in the future. There have been speculations that they might work on Mario spinoff films with supporting characters such as Donkey Kong and Luigi.

There are a lot of characters and properties in the Nintendo library that they can turn into films such as The Legend of Zelda, Star Fox, F-Zero, Kirby, and Metroid.

There is also the Pokemon property which has been adapted into a Hollywood live-action/CGI hybrid film a few years ago with Detective Pikachu. A sequel is currently in development although there is no news yet on whether it is officially moving forward.

Considering the massive success of The Super Mario Bros. Movie and the numerous properties in the Nintendo library that are available for them to mine, it is not surprising that they have plans to do more films and it is a matter of time before we will be hearing an official announcement regarding it.
