It’s been a long time coming, and now, Gege Akutami finally blessed Maki fans. This is because the Jujutsu Kaisen Volume 22 cover was revealed recently, and it features fan-favorite Maki Zenin.
Among fans in the west, Maki Zenin is one of the most popular characters thanks in part to her transformation following the Shibuya Incident arc.
Despite being a major character, Maki has never appeared on any volume covers, until now.
Spoiler Warning: There are spoilers for the Jujutsu Kaisen manga in this article.
Maki Zenin’s Power-up
Even during the earlier arcs, many fans have already professed their love for Maki Zenin thanks to her no-nonsense attitude. Fans also love how capable she is despite being a non-sorcerer.
Maki got even more attention from fans following the major events of the Shibuya Incident arc.
During this arc, Maki was horribly disfigured by Jogo’s flames, though she at least survived the encounter.
In another tragic turn of events, Maki goes to the Zenin household in preparation for the Culling Game, but she is trapped by her father and left to die along with her sister, Mai.
While Mai dies soon after being trapped, she explains that doing so will unlock Maki’s full power.
Maki then awakes with renewed power, enough to slaughter most of the Zenin clan members.
Thus, Maki’s full power was realized, with her strength now rivaling that of Toji Zenin.
Following this, the manga picks up her story in the Sakurajima Colony where she faces Naoya Zenin, who is transformed into a Cursed Spirit.

Jujutsu Kaisen Volume 22 Cover Reveal
While Maki has a scar on her eye from the latest manga events, the Volume 22 cover depicts her appearance with both eyes intact.
Another interesting detail is that she is making a pinky promise in the top left corner, presumably with Mai.
This is a reference to the sisters’ farewell when Mai asks Maki to “destroy everything.”
Thanks to Maki’s popularity and the fact that a volume cover with her has long been requested by fans, Maki Zenin trended on Twitter with over 50k tweets soon after the next volume cover was shared.
As expected, fans were elated by the volume reveal, with many praising both the cover’s look and its reference to Maki and Mai’s promise.
It’s also fitting that Maki is on the cover as this volume will include the Sakurajima Colony chapters.
Jujutsu Kaisen Volume 22 will be released in Japan on March 3, 2023. Right now, there’s no word yet on when it will be released in English.
