Joss Whedon Talks About Style vs. Substance in Marvel vs. DC Approach

With Doctor Strange's premiere in theaters almost here, it's another wait-and-see moment if Marvel will have another great movie over DC's cinematic universe.

If you ask Joss Whedon, he is still holding out some hope for DC, despite the company's current record in terms of released films. In an interview with Complex, Whedon revealed what he thinks makes Marvel stand out against its biggest rival.

"Everybody's got their own method. I think Marvel has been more successful systematically. DC has been more cinematic—their stuff looks amazing—but I feel like Kevin [Feige] is a really good storyteller. He really cares about coherence, and I feel like style never defeats substance at Marvel, but a little style creeps in."

Whedon even touches on DC's decision to have a separate hero character for its TV and cinematic works. For one thing, there is the very correct confusion for viewers, especially perhaps for the younger audience who tune in to both mediums. But of course, DC already dealt with this, and while the reasoning is pretty sound, I can't help but appreciate Whedon's take on this.

Still, it seems Whedon is still hopeful for upcoming DC movies—and that's Wonder Woman. For one thing, the trailer already has everyone's attention.

"I want it to be good… I'll probably be disappointed, me more than anybody else, because I'll be like, ‘Wow, my version…' or whatever, but I can still get myself up for it."

The next Marvel movie, Doctor Strange will be out in theaters on Nov. 4. DC's next movie, Wonder Woman, will be out June 2, 2017.
