John Wick Director Not As Involved in Ana de Armas Spinoff As You Think

Now that Chad Stahelski is taking a break after John Wick: Chapter 4 to think about a potential Chapter 5 story, the franchise is in development with spinoffs, namely a series called The Continental and a film spinoff, Ballerina.

Ballerina centers Ana de Armas as a ballerina assassin who, pretty much similar to the franchise’s main story, goes on a revenge spree to hunt down the people who killed her family.

The film spinoff is rumored to feature a cameo from Keanu Reeves’ titular retired assassin with a ‘small part to play in’ the upcoming film.

Ballerina will also mark the first time Stahelski is not directing a John Wick-related film from his beloved franchise.

“Look, I try to give as much help as I can in the beginning.” Stahelski admitted on The Direct when asked if he is involved in Ballerina.

“And then honestly, like, like Len Wiseman, who’s directing or who is currently posting Ballerina.”

“I actually worked for Len when he was directing Die Hard 4 and I was just a stuntman. So I’ve known Len for a while.” The John Wick director added, “Great guy, big fan of his.”

The 54-year-old director went on to say how much Wiseman immersed himself in the universe of John Wick, enough to conjure its very own spinoff, Ballerina.

“I think overseeing and helping guide in the mythos that we’ve created is great.” Stahelski said, “But the individuality of the filmmakers and storytellers we bring need to insert themselves into it.”

Stahelski set John Wick: Chapter 4 as an example, expressing that the biggest key to John Wick’s success: was the film being a “love letter and a personal note from Keanu Reeves and me.”

‘If there’s something you like about John Wick 4, that’s me. If there’s something you don’t like about it, that’s me, too.”

Eventually, Stahelski ended his statement by overall stating that no matter what Wiseman does with the spinoff, “it’s gonna make [the franchise] good.”

“So in a way, it’s kind of cool because it’s a universe that no matter who we get, in order to succeed, we have to put ourselves into [it].”

Stahelski added, “It’s not following some lore or IP that’s been around for 80 years.”

The John Wick spinoff, Ballerina, is currently slated to premiere on June 7, 2024.

Meanwhile, John Wick: Chapter 4 is still out in theaters.
