John Wick Chapter 4: Plot, Cast, Release Date, Trailer, and Everything You Need to Know

The eagerly awaited John Wick: Chapter 4 has officially started shooting, according to an image of a title banner that simply reads ‘John Wick: Chapter 4', which was shared by a newcomer to the franchise, actor Shamier Anderson, on Instagram. The fourth film in the ‘sleeper hit' franchise will see the return of Keanu Reeves as the infamous, sleek-suited, and sharp-shooting assassin John Wick, who still has the biggest target on his back within the assassin underworld. The franchise started with somewhat humble beginnings and a simple premise: a grieving widower avenges the death of a puppy posthumously gifted to him by his late wife, thus plunging him back into a dark underworld he once promised he'd never return to.

Now, John Wick has gone on to become a highly lucrative property, with John Wick: Chapter 2 and John Wick: Chapter 3 Parabellum proving to be successful both critically and financially. The most recent entry in the franchise also saw Matrix stars Keanu Reeves and Laurence Fishburne reunited after 14 years, which led to fun fan theories that the John Wick universe actually takes place within that of The Matrix (for which a fourth film is also in production).

The concept for John Wick could have easily been mirrored with the likes of Taken and Atomic Blonde, films that saw veteran actors undertake physically demanding roles in which they violently face off against bad guys using a certain set of skills and guns (lots of guns). However, the neo-noir action thrillers seem to be made with just as much precision and accuracy as John Wick with a firearm. Keanu Reeves has also proved himself highly capable in the role from a physical perspective, leaving even Matrix fans hungry for more.

Is there an official trailer for John Wick 4?

As the film has only just started shooting, it's unlikely we'll get a trailer anytime soon. But it's possible we'll see one emerge in the coming months, as equally popular films that are due for release a whole year from now are already being heavily marketed.

What will John Wick 4 be about?

As for the new image reveal, it isn't much to go by in terms of plot details, but one can easily surmise that this will be a continuation of the events of the previous film Parabellum, in which we last saw John fall several stories from the top of a skyscraper, only to be recovered (alive, of course, with only minor injuries) by Laurence Fishburne's Bowery King, and is hellbent on revenge against The High Table. However, we do know that filming locations will include Greece, Berlin, Paris, Japan, and New York City, which will make this chapter the most globe-trotting one yet.

In a recent interview with Collider, Laurence Fishburne spoke about the script for the upcoming film:

"I read the script. It's really, really cool. As much as it's the same world as the other three films, it's just deeper. It's much deeper in terms of the code of the assassin and the relationship that he has with one character in particular who I think Mr. Watanabe is playing... is really the heart and soul of it."

John Wick 4 cast

The film is being directed by Chad Stahelski, who helmed the first installment. It stars Keanu Reeves, Laurence Fishburne, Rina Sawayama, Ian McShane, Donnie Yen, Scott Adkins, Shamier Anderson, Mortal Kombat reboot star Hiroyuki Sanada and Bill Skarsgard in a mystery role. Sadly, it appears that Halle Berry won't be reprising her role as Sofia from Parabellum, with her character now being ‘even' with John Wick.

Lance Reddick has also been confirmed to be reprising the role of Charon, the 'multi-skilled' concierge at New York's Continental Hotel who has appeared in all three films so far. Meanwhile, Mark Zaror has been cast as the film's main villain. Zaror is best known for his role in From Dusk Till Dawn: The Series.

Actor Donnie Yen recently shared a set photo on Instagram. It has been reported that his character will be an old friend of John Wick's, sharing a similar past with some of the same enemies.

Clancy Brown was also recently cast in the film. Brown is best known for his roles in films like 1989's Pet Sematary and Starship Troopers, and has also appeared in The Mandalorian and lent his voice to Darth Maul's brother Savage Opress in animated show The Clone Wars.

When is John Wick 4 coming out?

Originally scheduled for May 21 this year, John Wick: Chapter 4 was pushed back due to the COVID-19 pandemic, and also because of Reeves' commitments to yet another upcoming blockbuster franchise sequel The Matrix 4. John Wick: Chapter 4 will now be released in theaters on May 27, 2022.

The Matrix and John Wick star has recently undergone something of a Hollywood rebirth, with both the aforementioned franchises now in full swing. Last year, he even reprised another iconic role in the long-awaited threequel Bill & Ted Face the Music. Here's to even more Keanu in the coming years...
