John Boyega Wanted To Prove Himself So He Took Roles Outside Of Star Wars

John Boyega might be prominently known for his role as the stormtrooper-turned-resistance-fighter in Lucasfilm's Star Wars sequel trilogy, however the English actor's been making a conscious effort to expand his horizon and take projects outside of the franchise.

Speaking in an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Boyega talked about how he wanted to prove his range and versatility as an actor.

"I knew I wanted to work between the [Star Wars] films because I understand most of the population would probably be introduced to me through Star Wars, and not all of them would go back to see my early work, so there was obviously something to prove, in terms of versatility and the other stuff I could do."

The actor also explained why he called Detroit as the biggest movie of his career in an interview last week despite already appearing as a major character in the sequel trilogy of the Star Wars saga.

"And they go, 'Are you crazy? You've been in Star Wars! How can Detroit be the biggest movie of your career?' Because it depends on what you value as quality. For me, quality is longevity, and longevity in acting comes from an access to skills and an appeal that could see you getting work for years, hopefully. And so, for me, I just felt like I discovered that side of myself while doing Detroit. Whatever you see me do after Detroit will have been inspired by the artistic freedom I felt I had and how deep I felt I was able to go into a character."

While it seems like Boyega has everything planned out, it's great to see this budding Hollywood actor taking his craft seriously, going beyond the franchise to help establish his name inside and outside of the Star Wars franchise.

Boyega is set to reprise his role as Finn in Star Wars: The Last Jedi on December 15, 2017.
