John Boyega has a favorite Star Wars movie, but it may be a controversial choice for many fans given that it’s quite an unexpected pick.

When you ask fans about their favorite Star Wars movie, chances are that many will mention either A New Hope or Empire Strikes Back. After all, these two are typically considered the “best” films in the franchise.

Of course, there are some other fairly common answers, with some fans loving Revenge of the Sith the most given how it shows the saga’s most pivotal moment.

None of these three films is Boyega’s favorite though, as he revealed in an interview for the Star Wars Insider magazine back in 2016.

John Boyega’s Favorite Star Wars Movie is an Unexpected Pick

As fans hope for John Boyega to return with a new Star Wars project, Slash Film reported on the actor’s surprising favorite film in the franchise.

This magazine interview was released just after the release of The Force Awakens, meaning Boyega’s answer is not any of the sequels.

Instead, Boyega mentioned that his favorite Star Wars movie is Episode 6: Return of the Jedi.

Boyega explained that this film is his favorite in the franchise as it features “Luke Skywalker at a very vulnerable time.”

He went on to explain that Return of the Jedi not only expands the universe and Luke’s connection to it, but it also features a great mix of comedy and drama.

What’s more, Boyega said that he loved the Ewoks and the other creatures introduced in the film. Plus, the fact that Luke was the focal point was something that Boyega believed strengthened the film’s impact.

Why Boyega’s Favorite Might Be a Controversial Choice

Return of the Jedi is not a bad film by any means as it’s still praised for how it neatly wraps up the trilogy, all while giving a satisfying conclusion to Anakin and Luke’s story.

If you ask fans and critics though, the final film in the original trilogy is the weakest, with the Ewoks sequences being criticized for slowing the pace down. Plus, the rehash of the Death Star is also seen as lacking in creativity.

Of course, the key distinction here is that Boyega didn’t claim that Return of the Jedi is the best movie as he simply said that it is his favorite.

With the sequel trilogy being over now, it’ll be curious to know if Boyega still considers Episode 6 his favorite.

Moreover, it’ll be interesting to know what Boyega thinks of the new Disney+ shows in the franchise.
