There's no denying that Luke Skywalker is one of the best characters in the Star Wars Universe. However, while he's always been considered by longtime fans as the true face of the franchise — something that is hard to argue, Star Wars' story was never meant to revolve around the beloved Jedi.

In a 2005 interview with Rolling Stone (via Slash Film), franchise creator George Lucas cleared the air on the fans' biggest misconception when it comes to Star Wars' true main character and according to him, it has always been Anakin Skywalker aka Darth Vader, and not Luke.

Lucas explains: "I made a series of movies that was about one thing: Darth Vader. Originally, people thought it was all about Luke. The early films are about Luke redeeming his father, so Luke's the focus. But it's also about Princess Leia and her struggle to reestablish the Republic, which is what her mother was doing. So it's really about mothers and daughters and fathers and sons."

Lucas' remark may shock a lot of fans but you know, the idea makes complete sense. Although Luke was presented as the main protagonist of the original trilogy and was seemingly put at the forefront of things, the entire Skywalker saga was centered on Anakin. From the whole Jedi prophecy of him being the "chosen one", how he was corrupted and lured to the dark side, and his eventual road to redemption.

Heck, Vader's influence is even prevalent during the divisive sequel trilogy.
