Though Prince Harry stepped down as a senior royal and left the U.K. with his wife, Meghan Markle, and kid, Archie, in 2020, he maintained a close relationship with his grandmother, the late Queen Elizabeth II. So, how close were the two when the monarch was still alive?

Prince William and Meghan Markle's relationship with the royal family has reportedly strained but not with Queen Elizabeth. The Duke of Sussex ensured their bond remained intact amid all the controversies and allegations he said against the Firm.

Prince Harry Updated Queen Elizabeth About His Family

According to People, the prince kept Her Majesty about his life and kids, Archie and Lilibet, in the U.S. through video calls.

He even visited her at her Windsor Castle home in April 2022 before going to The Netherlands for that year's Invictus Games.

The duke also made sure she met her second child, whose first name was inspired by his grandmother when the Sussexes joined the royal family for her Platinum Jubilee celebrations in June of the same year.

Queen Elizabeth Remained a Grandmother to Prince Harry

For her part, Queen Elizabeth remained a grandmother to Prince Harry despite being the commonwealth's leader.

However, an insider revealed she struggled between sympathizing with the couple and being a firm monarch.

"One thing about the Queen is she has to manage being a grandmother but also how it affects the wider institution," a royal insider told People Royals.

Prince Harry Described Queen Elizabeth as a Grandmother

In an interview in 2012 via Insider, Prince Harry revealed Queen Elizabeth was a "very normal" grandmother.

"Very, very normal and very relaxed," he said.

"She obviously takes a huge interest in what we all do, and that's her children as well as her grandchildren," he continued. "She wants to know which charities we're supporting, how life is going, and our jobs and such. She actually has a vested interest in what we do."

In another talk in 2016, he honored his grandma during his speech at Buckingham Palace for The Queen's Young Leaders Awards.

"I have been extremely fortunate to meet many exceptional people over the years, but none more so than Her Majesty The Queen," he stated, per People. "As the head of the Commonwealth, the Nation, the Armed Forces, and our family, I, like millions of others across the world, have been able to look to her for inspiration and guidance."

Prince Harry also honored Queen Elizabeth's service to the country.

"The Queen, who assumed the challenge of leadership at such a young age, has shown us all the importance of selfless commitment and service," he went on to say. "She is the example I aspire to and the standard by which I will judge my contribution."
