Demon Slayer Season 3 Episode 8 titled The Mu in Muichiro dives deeper into Muichiro and Yuichiro’s heartbreaking backstory.

In the episode, Muichiro recalls that he had a twin brother named Yuichiro.

The twin brothers come from a family of woodcutters. Muichiro loves seeing his father work and he often helps him carry the load of lumber.

One fateful night, Muichiro’s mother, who has been sick, is feeling terrible.

Her condition starts to deteriorate and Muichiro gets extremely worried. Meanwhile, his father is out in order to source herbs for his ailing wife.

Unfortunately, that night, both Muichiro and Yuichiro’s parents passed away.

As the twins walk back from their parents’ graves, Yuichiro remarks that compassion toward others is meaningless.

Muichiro is severely hurt by his twin brother’s heartless comment and speaks up against it.

After their parents’ deaths, they start living together, but it is quite difficult to live as kids without parents.

Then, one day, Amane Ubuyashiki appears before Muichiro and introduces herself as the wife of the Demon Slayer Corps’ leader.

She meets the twin brothers and reveals that they are descendants of the swordsmen who used the first Breathing Style.

Muichiro is excited to become a swordsman but the fire of his excitement is instantly extinguished by his twin brother. Moreover, Yuichiro is sick of his brother’s optimistic outlook on life.

Later, a demon appears in their home and is ready to kill Muichiro. But before he could attack, Yuichiro leaps out of his bed to stand between his brother and the demon.

Sadly, the demon ends up slashing Yuichiro and severs one of his arms. The demon also ridicules the brothers for being weaklings.

Muichiro could not stand the insults, and a sudden rush of rage rushes through his body.

In this fit of rage, Muichiro obliterates the demon by pinning and slicing his body into the ground.

Later, he crawls back into the house to check on his wounded brother. As Yuichiro takes his last breath, he tells Muichiro that the "Mu" in his name doesn’t mean meaningless.

He reveals that the "Mu" in his name, Muichiro, means Infinity.

Cut to the present, when Muichiro is facing an Upper Rank named Gyokko, Muichiro remembers his brother’s dying words.

Now, let’s address the theories and rumors swirling around that Muichiro might actually be Yuichiro.

The Demon Slayer manga refutes this theory that Muichiro and Yuichiro are one person. In fact, Yuichiro dies in his brother’s arms after the demon’s fatal attack.

There are theories circulating that the monologue about Muichiro at the end of Episode 8 is by Yuichiro.

However, it is just that Muichiro is remembering Yuichiro’s final words to him before he perishes.

Moreover, they sound the same because their voice actor, Kengo Kawanishi (who also voices Gen Asagiri in Dr. Stone), is the same.

Many would argue that the monologue voice did not sound like a dying voice.

But we can say that it was Muichiro remembering his brother’s words, and he would likely not want to hear Yuichiro’s dying voice.

While these fan theories have some weight if you are an anime-only fan, if you weigh these theories against the manga, they do not really hold up.
