If there's one thing that connects You Season 4 with previous seasons, aside from the killings, is that Joe Goldberg (played by Penn Badgley) always has one person he obsesses about.

In the first season, it was Guinevere Beck (played by Elizabeth Lail). In You Season 2, it was Love Quinn (played by Victoria Pedretti). And in You Season 3, first it was Natalie Engler (played by Michaela McManus) before she was killed by Love. Then Joe fixated his obsession on Marienne Bellamy (played by Tati Gabrielle), a simple librarian from Madre Linda with a daughter.

When the third season of You ended, Marienne managed to escape to Paris with her daughter in tow after Love revealed Joe's true identity. This excited fans to think that Joe would be making his way to Europe to look for his estranged lover.

When You Season 4 Part 1 came out, fans were shocked to see that Marienne was only part of a few flashback scenes. The story simply did not add up.

But since Joe was convincing his avid fans that he has changed, it gave fans hope that the serial killer has moved on maturely. And by moving on maturely, we mean he didn't kill Marienne.

So in further episodes of You Season 4 Part 1, it appeared that Joe had changed and was now the one being hunted by a mysterious stalker called the Eat the Rich killer. After the end of the first part, it was revealed that this stalker was author Rhys Montrose (played by Ed Speleers).

But was that goodbye scene the last we see of Marienne? Apparently, not.

You bet! And Marienne's involvement in You Season 4 Part 2 gives us a glimpse at how far Joe has gone this time around.

Marienne does not only star in a couple of scenes-- instead, there's an entire episode where we see things (including Joe) from her own perspective. And this POV was a pretty interesting one, since we get to see Joe as the scary and insane killer that he is-- not the romanticized serial killer (who's always deep in thought) that we've come to know.

As it turns out, Joe's encounter with Marienne was nothing but painless. After seemingly letting her board a train back to Paris, it turns out that Joe actually drugged and kidnapped Marienne. He left her captive in his apartment, where he would zone out for hours listening to interviews of Rhys. He kept Marienne sedated, only letting her stay fully awake to feed herself with only one free hand. After that, she would lose consciousness once again after drinking the water, which Joe had spiked.

When Marienne realizes she only had one chance to escape, she feigns losing consciousness as Joe puts her inside a wooden crate. She gets transported to an abandoned building with a glass cage inside it. Once Joe opens the box, Marienne tries to escape but was unable to do so. In the process, she breaks her arm and Joe catches up to her. He puts her in the glass cage and locks her in it, only to visit her for a few more times to leave food for her to consume.

Marienne tries to trick Joe into believing she misses him. But sadly, Joe has become delusional, with a different personality talking to Marienne instead. This personality has become Rhys Montrose, the author that Joe became fixated with throughout You Season 4 Part 1, whom he believes was responsible for framing him for the murders. As Joe tries to expose Rhys, he forgets all about Marienne, who has been trapped in the glass cage without any food for months.

Thankfully, Marienne manages to stay alive after all this time. When Joe's (now called Professor Jonathan Moore) star student, Nadia (played by Amy-Leigh Hickman) starts doubting his professor's actions, she unexpectedly comes across a key that leads to the abandoned building where Marienne is locked. Nadia arrives just in time when Marienne starts to lose her mind due to hunger and boredom.

The two come up with a plan on how to get Marienne out without Joe knowing that she managed to outsmart him, or worse-- discover that Nadia has been onto him this whole time.

When Joe finally remembers where Marienne is, he hurries to apologize to her and figure out a way to let her out. Later, Marienne connives with Nadia to pretend that she is the one Joe texts about her daughter, Juliette (played by Dallas Skye). She also pretends to overdose on the drugs Joe left in her cage so when Joe discovers her "dead" body, he leaves it on a park bench so that authorities can find her. This way, Juliette will know that her mother isn't coming back anymore.

But as it turns out, Marienne's death isn't real. She previously took beta-blockers to convince Joe her heart wasn't beating anymore. When Joe leaves the park, Nadia hurries to inject her with a stimulant to bring her back to consciousness. Marienne then hurries back to Paris to be with her daughter, promising to never leave her side again.

Will Marienne Seek Revenge From Joe in You Season 5?

You Season 4 ends with Marienne coming across an article about the newly-reinvented Joe Goldberg as he makes his return to New York, with a new beau by his side. Joe and Kate (played by Charlotte Ritchie) get the help of PR and search scrubbers to erase any doubt of his past. They were also able to bribe the chief in Madre Linda to rule out any suspicion on his participation of Love's death.

The question is, will Marienne seek revenge from Joe if a fifth season gets released? It's unlikely, especially since she's all alone. After all, Juliette is most important to her and cannot risk to lose her a third time.

We'll know for sure if You gets renewed for a fifth season.

You Season 4 is now streaming on Netflix.
