Who would have ever thought that a tree would be so iconic, he would be having his very own titular series on Disney Plus? Well, I Am Groot is coming to the MCU for the fan-favorite character. If it is canon, it is expected to form part of the fourth phase of the franchise. However, it seems like James Gunn suggests otherwise.

Is I Am Groot Canon To The MCU? James Gunn Suggests Otherwise

I Am Groot forms part of the slate of the fourth phase of the Marvel Cinematic Universe where the famous and beloved tree, Groot, will be having his own series of shorts in a spinoff show. With the character surely being canon to the MCU, the question lies on whether his own series is part of the Guardians of the Galaxy story.

However, upon posting the official poster of I Am Groot, James Gunn pointed on Twitter that the animated shorts does not necessarily form part of the Guardians of the Galaxy saga, "They are animated shorts so not necessarily part of the Guardians saga."

This causes some confusion on whether I Am Groot is canon to the MCU. Thankfully, Marvel Studios Animation boss Brad Winderbaum cleared the air in a recent interview with ComicBook.com and indicated that I Am Groot is, indeed, canon.

Winderbaum clarifies, "It's a narrow window, right? It takes place between the end of Guardians 2 and before the tag scene in Guardians 2. So it's in this narrow window where Groot is in that kind of post-toddler stage of development."

The timeline of I Am Groot is between Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 where the adorable Baby Groot saved the team by pressing the right button and before the tag scene in the same film then it follows Infinity War where he grew to be an adolescent tree annoying the other heroes.

Still, even when it is not canon and would not affect the upcoming appearance of Groot in Thor: Love and Thunder, surely, fans would love to know what happened between the time Groot was a baby tree to an adolescent one in a series of shorts on his very own show.

It may be something like a fan-service but it definitely serves its purpose of giving more light to the story of the beloved hero, Groot. There is no confirmation yet on how long will the series run.

See Baby Groot take on the universe in I Am Groot, arriving on Disney Plus with all five shorts in one go on August 10, 2022.
