Fans would be glad to know that Seth Gilliam, who played Father Gabriel Stokes in the original The Walking Dead series, made a brief appearance in The Ones Who Live episode 5 titled Become.

Even though his short cameo was done in the form of Jadis' flashback, fans are stoked to see one of the OG characters return on-screen.

Seeing the man reminded people he was half-blind, despite having both of his eyes originally working in his first appearance. So, what gives? How did this happen?

He lost his eye in season 8 episode 5 titled The Big Scary U where he gets captured by Negan's Saviors team. There, Gabriel was forced to work under Eugene's.

Prior to Gabriel's capture, he and Negan disguised themselves using the guts from Walkers to escape from the Sanctuary trailer. Because of this, the priest contracted an infection that affected his eyes.

What made things worse and uncurable for his sight was when Negan locked him in the room, not having had the chance to wash off the infection he gained from the dead.

Guts from the dead entering the human body. How bad could it be? This led to permanent damage to his vision, but more specifically, to his right eye.

You'd be surprised to know that Father Gabriel never lost his vision in The Walking Dead comics. In fact, his storyline going blind was exclusively made for the AMC show.

What makes this interesting is that Father Gabriel never let this loss of vision affect the way he handled his role in the series.

He was still a keen sharpshooter and was agile enough to keep himself from getting bitten by the zombies. Unfortunately, not enough to have run away from what Jadis had in store for him, as shown in The Ones Who Live.
