After several delays in 2021 and 2022, the new Dungeons & Dragons movie is finally here. Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves follows a band of adventurers on a mission to retrieve a powerful relic, and maybe some loot along the way.

Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves is one of the highly-anticipated films of 2023 and contains an incredible cast who each perform their roles well. But is the movie worth watching? Don’t worry, this is a spoiler-free review.

Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves: A Fantasy Film with a Comedic Touch

Fantasy movies and television series tend to be dark and gloomy, but this is not the case for Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves.

The film is hilarious and it doesn’t take itself too seriously. The comedy flows naturally; it’s not something forced. The movie shows that mixing fantasy and humor actually works.

Chris Pine as Edgin makes up most of the comedy in the film. He just tries to make plans that apparently fail and makes more plans hoping they won’t fail. When faced with obstacles, Edgin just rolls his eyes and gets the work done (but really, he just wants some gold along the way too). And sometimes, Edgin the Bard just wants to sing his problems away. So look out for Chris Pine singing with a lute.

Also, the good thing about this film is that you don’t have to play D&D to understand it. The film is not just for fans of the tabletop role-playing game. There are many mentions of lands, races, and tribes, but these concepts don’t have to be laid out in detail for the audience to understand the film. You can just go along with the plot and comedy.

Michelle Rodriguez as Holga Kilgore and Regé-Jean Page as Xenk the Paladin definitely deserve applause for the action scenes in this film.

Holga is this big, muscled woman who’s tough and can easily beat you if you disturb her eating her potatoes. She’s also straightforward and doesn’t care about admitting that she does things for the loot. Xenk, on the other hand, is this mighty paladin who saves Edgin and the team a couple of times. Rodriguez and Page certainly deliver praiseworthy action scenes that would make you crave more.

A Comedic Fantasy Film with Themes of Family and Friendship

While the film is centered on action, adventure, and comedy, there’s also emotion in it. Apart from laughter, you are going to feel something else throughout the movie. The film does tackle themes of family, friendship, and love (but of course, with a mix of laughter in it).

Edgin struggles to be the best father to his daughter Kira. He also deals with grief following the loss of his wife Zia. We see a platonic relationship between the duo Edgin and Holga. Simon also deals with the family pressure of becoming a great Sorcerer. And the tough warrior Holga gets her heart broken and wishes for closure.

There’s enough comedy, fantasy, and adventure in the film, but the themes of family, friendship, and love balance all the feels.
